The
Chongqing Major, the 2nd of the 2018/2019 DPC season,
is over (as are the Qualifiers for the 3rd Major). What
were the results?
First, the Majors are still using the
strange and ineffective system OWLD (Opening, Winners', Losers',
Decider), though I can't deny that the system sent 7 of my 8 top
teams into the upper bracket (and the team which failed was TNC who
were playing
with
a stand-in
because
of the
Kuku
incident).
Very few teams attending The Chongqing
Major achieved any change in my rankings, except for one significant
distinction. Team Secret and Virtus Pro have demonstrated no other
teams are comparable. Simultaneously, LGD and Evil Geniuses have
separated themselves from the teams beneath them. Between them,
Secret and VP have claimed a 1st and 2nd place
award each, while EG earned both 3rd places. With these
victories, Secret and VP have already
secured their place at The
International 2019, while EG is essentially, if not technically,
a lock for the event as well. LGD hasn't achieved quite as much as
the other three, and they might falter in the future, as their mid
player, Maybe,
is taking a break for the next Major.
Below are my current rankings, and a
number to indicate their change in rank from the last article. Red

Some final thoughts. Valve has
mandated that each Major must include two qualifier spots for each of
the six regions (North America, South America, Europe, CIS, China,
Southeast Asia). Along with a spot for the winner of the Minor, that
leaves three openings for Major organizers to distribute as they
wish. There has been much contention and gnashing of teeth, because
the past two, and the upcoming Major have increased the number of
qualifying spots for the North American, European, and Chinese
Regions. Various commentators have argued these spots should be
doled out differently. At the same time, critics have complained
that teams like Secret and Virtus Pro shouldn't need to qualify for
the next Major.
The solution is simple.
The three extra spots at Majors should
awarded as direct invites to the top 3 winners of the last Major. At the
same time, one of the two free spots at the Minor should be given to
the 4th place team if they fail to qualify of the Major.
That's it.
There will be another article about the Dota Pro Scene after the
StarLadder
ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor which ends March 10th.
