The Group Stage for the Major is
horribly inefficient for selecting the teams for seeding the bracket.
The Kuala
Lumpur Major includes 16 teams, but it's possible to be in
the upper bracket after only playing a total of four games against
two teams. How can anyone seed a tournament with that deficit of
information? As the system stands, a minimum of 40 games will be
played, but there could be as many as 60, depending on the number of
best of threes which require the full number of games. You know what
PGL Esports could do with 56 games ? They could break the 16 teams
into 2 groups and have them each play 1 game against every other team
in the group. Or for 48 matches PGL could retain the same four groups,
but everyone plays every other member of their group for 2 games.
The problem is, in the current group
stage, the best team will only play two other teams, but it's also
possible (probable!) for a team to win the first round, lose the
second, and then play the same team they beat in the first round and
win again. They will be in the upper bracket. All the system proves
is they can beat one team!
The other two options I've offered
would make teams play a larger variety of opponents (either 7 or 3)
and insure they demonstrate some skill before being placed in the
upper bracket of a one million dollar tournament. It means, their
placement will not be based mostly on their first draw of opponent in
a tiny group.
Here are my predictions for the first
day. I'll be posting predictions for the rest of the event directly
to Twitter, instead of composing a new article each day.
Opening Matches Group A:
Secret over J.Storm
Pain over NiP
Winners:
Secret over Pain
Losers:
NiP over J.Storm
Decider:
Pain over NiP
Opening Matches Group B:
EG over Aster
Vici over TNC
Winners:
EG over Vici
Losers:
TNC over Aster
Decider:
Vici over TNC
Also, I am currently loving the new,
independent version of Overthrow
2.0, which allows for all the heroes, has a 8v8v8 mode, and
tracks a player's overall record and current win streak.
