A Summer Repast

Two flaxen ears of corn,
A drop of oil in a pan.
Three summer ripe tomatoes,
And an oven on the burn.

A sprinkling of silky flour everywhere,
Fused with golden egg yolks in a bowl.
Sliced zucchini, green as fresh grown grass,
Sweating as the kitchen heat swells.

A pan, a pot, cast iron on the stove,
Oil, water, and onion bubble together.
Sultriness pervades the room,
Intensifying the July atmosphere.

Chopped and in the pan, tomatoes join allium,
Red as the essence they hope to reinvigorate.
Next burner over, neighbors to the relish,
Fry dipped and dripping squash.

Boiling the corn goes in,
And transforms from dull to brilliant.
It comes out again, so quick,
before the crunch is lost.

In the oven, not forgotten,
Hard canvas like material bleeds,
Sweet syrupy sap,
Orange soft flesh.

All together on the table,
Looks so good its almost worth a final appraisal,
